Brown Spots in Your Lawn: Causes and Fixes for Michigan Homeowners

Brown spots can mean a dozen different things β€” and the fix depends on the cause. Here's how to diagnose and treat lawn brown spots in Macomb County.

Not All Brown Spots Are the Same

Brown spots are one of the most common lawn complaints in Macomb County, and they're also one of the most misdiagnosed. Treating for the wrong cause wastes money and time β€” and can make things worse. Here's how to identify what's actually happening.

Common Causes of Brown Spots

1. Drought stress

Michigan summers can bring dry spells that turn lawn sections brown, especially in full-sun areas or spots with sandy soil. Test: push a screwdriver 6 inches into the brown area. If it's hard and dry, water is the issue. Solution: water deeply (1 inch per week) and raise your mowing height.

2. Grub damage

White grubs (Japanese beetle and European chafer larvae) feed on grass roots just below the surface. Affected turf feels spongy, peels back like carpet, and birds and animals may be digging in the area. Solution: apply grub control in late June–July before damage appears, or a curative treatment in August if grubs are confirmed.

3. Fungal disease

Brown patch, dollar spot, and red thread are all common in Michigan lawns during humid summer conditions. Fungal spots often have irregular edges or a ring pattern. Solution: improve air circulation, avoid evening watering, and apply a fungicide if needed.

4. Dog urine

Circular brown spots with a green ring around the perimeter are a classic sign of dog urine burn. The nitrogen concentration kills the center but fertilizes the edges. Solution: flush with water immediately after use; reseed damaged areas.

5. Thatch buildup

A thick thatch layer blocks water from reaching roots, creating dry brown patches even when it rains. Solution: dethatch and aerate.

6. Chemical burn

Fertilizer, herbicide, or de-icer applied too heavily causes brown streaks or spots. Solution: water thoroughly to flush; reseed if needed.

When to Call a Pro

If you can't identify the cause, or if the spots are spreading, it's time to have an expert take a look. Catching grub damage or fungal disease early prevents a small problem from becoming a full lawn renovation.
