How to Prepare Garden Beds for Spring in Michigan
Get your garden beds ready before the growing season hits. Here's the step-by-step process for Michigan homeowners to prep beds the right way.
Timing Is Everything
In Macomb County, the window for spring bed prep typically opens in mid-March through April, once the ground has thawed and consistent daytime temps are above 40ยฐF. Working soil when it's still frozen or waterlogged causes compaction and can damage soil structure.
Watch for these signs that it's time to start:
Step 1: Clear Winter Debris
Remove dead leaves, fallen branches, and any plant material left from fall. If you left perennial foliage standing through winter for wildlife habitat and winter interest, now is the time to cut it back.
Be careful with emerging perennials. Hostas, peonies, and other plants push up early โ look before you rake.
Step 2: Cut Back Perennials
Trim dead stems and foliage from last season down to 2โ4 inches above the crown. This encourages fresh growth and prevents disease from overwintering in old plant material.
Step 3: Edge the Beds
Winter frost heaving and settling often blurs bed edges. Use a flat-blade edger or spade to redefine crisp lines between your beds and lawn. This is one of the biggest visual improvements you can make with minimal effort.
Step 4: Amend the Soil
Macomb County's clay soil benefits from annual organic amendments. Work in compost, aged manure, or a quality soil conditioner to improve drainage and structure. This is also a good time to do a soil test if you haven't in a few years.
Step 5: Apply Pre-Emergent Weed Control
Before mulching, apply a pre-emergent herbicide to the bed surface if weed pressure was an issue last year. This creates a barrier that prevents many annual weeds from germinating.
Step 6: Fresh Mulch
Finish with 2โ3 inches of fresh mulch to lock in moisture, suppress remaining weeds, and give beds a clean, finished look heading into the growing season.
